Dumars Memorial Day recap
| Great weekend of hockey in the Motor City leads to a record amount of overtime games!
In doing this recap, I wanted to focus on the few and far between amount of mercies we saw this weekend. In some divisions, none at all, which is attributed to the strength of the teams competing and the schedule taking into consideration the team's history and their past competition.
I want to thank the staff at Dumars again for making me as comfortable as possible. Frank, Kelly, Evil, Bob, John, Jo Jo, everyone here who helped and was a part of the great NARCh team. I can only be as good as the people who help and work with me and the staff here was fantastic all weekend.
So, let's get to it...
Squirt
Our round robin had the Tour Bordercats seed number one after a five point performance in round robin. They tied the Detroit Mission Stars in the first game of the event 3 3, which has left the Stars in second place with three points. Finishing in third is the Tour Oakville Coyotes and rounding out the division are the RBK 98s. When you look at the talent in this division as compared to where weve been, its interesting to see the Bordercats and Stars once again on top of the pack. The division plays out as the Cats and Stars will meet in the platinum final and the Coyotes and RBK 98s will meet in the Gold final.
As the gold championship unfolded, AJ Macrae and Damien Heinle would both net hat tricks to lead their team the Tour Oakville Coyotes to victory. The platinum final followed with Noah Cyr of the Tour Bordercats netting three goals and three assists. Kevin Maddox would add a pair of goals Garrett Hall would also chip in three points in the win for the Bordercats. Garrett Hall finished out as our top scorer, while Jacob Lawson was our top goaltender in the division.
Peewee
With ten teams in the peewee division, we looked for the round robin to give us an inkling of how things would work out. With Bar Down 95s, Can Am Stars, Detroit Mission Stars, OH MI 95', Team Advanced Care, Team Harrow, Ikon, The Wave, Tour Excitement 95 S and the Tour Oakville Coyotes 95s all finishing out their three game round robin, our rules would play into the top finisher in the division as goals against decided that the Wave would end up in the top slot, while OH MI 95 finished in the second slot. As we seeded for both gold division and platinum division playoffs, our semifinal games would bring the winners to the championships respectively.
In gold, Team Harrow disposed of the Can AM Stars, while the Tour Oakville Coyotes95 would dominate Team Advanced Care. As Harrow and the Coyotes would meet in the championships Alex Robert and Stino Biondo would each chip in a pair of goals apiece for the victory. As the first platinum seed Wave would take on the Tour Excitement 95s, the OH MI 95 would meet the Bardown 95s.
In those games, the plot of upset played well into what would happen as the Excitement would knock off the Wave 3 2 and Bar Down 95s would repeat in that role as they knocked off OH MI to set up the championships between two underdogs. As that game got underway both teams would trade goals as Anton Marinelli added a pair of tallies, while Cole Taylor would answer back with his own pair for Bar Down. Colin Cyr would score the eventual game winner with :48 seconds left in the game to the deafening response of the crowd. Our high scorers were Michael Prapavesis and Timmy Thurnau. Top goaltender was Blake Lochead.
Bantam
12 teams would all enter the Memorial day weekend qualifier looking to prove where they belong in the NARCh rankings. The Burlington Wave 94s, Detroit Adrenaline, Mission Rattlers Black and Red, Tour Oakville Coyotes 94, Rebel Sharks, Revision Buffalo Wings, Sea World Mayhem, Team Advanced Care, The Wave and Tour Excitement Brown and Yoko. As we went through our round robin process of determing where the teams would end for playoffs, Mission Rattlers Black and the Wave both finished undefeated.
As we began our platinum playoffs, The Burlington Wave 94 would meet the Mission Rattlers Red and in barn burning fashion wait for the heroics of Joey Wright who scored a natural hat trick to life them over the Rattlers, 5 3. Team Advanced Care, not wanting to be shown up, repeated the excitement of that game with a 4 3 win over the Rebel Sharks in overtime with Michael Walny supplying the winning goal. As we entered the semi-finals, The Rattlers Black took revenge for the Red teams loss by lopsidedly disposing of Advanced Care. The Wave soundly defeated the Burlington Wave 94s to advance to the championships.
As the championship began, both teams would feel each other out as we played chess on the rink. One team would score, then the other would immediately answer. We ended up deadlocked 2 2 as Nathan Renouf of the Rattlers would score both goals and Brad Kobryn would repeat that feat for the Wave. However, with only :07 seconds to play, a Rattler player would let Wave player Phil Kiss break unobstructed to the net,to tap in to score the game winner as the Wave players went bezerk and were all celebrating. The Wave added an empty net goal by Brad Kobryn to complete his hat trick for the afternoon.
With the Bantam gold division playoffs, The Tour Excitement Brown met the Oakville Coyotes 94 and advanced after beating them soundly. As the Seaworld Mayhem and the Detroit Adrenaline took the floor, Seaworld would squeak by them 3 1 to advance to the championships. Fans in the building were treated to a on the edge of your seat final as Seaworld and the Tour Excitement gave it all they had. Zack Zaepfel and Cameron Yarwood would score for the Excitement, while Mauro Ferrazzo would add two goals for the Mayhem and Stephen Christie and Nick Pagliacci would add single tallies to give the Mayhem the win.
Our high scorer was Tyler Spezia and our top goalie was Jared Ropchan.
We also want to thank George Brown of the Tour Excitement for working with us on the playoff schedule. With overtime games and one of the rinks running a little behind, George had to field some of his teams with shorter bench strength than he normally would, but he worked with us to make sure his teams played their games on time.
Midget
Eight teams would enter the stakes for the shot at the gold and platinum championships. Once again NARCh rules would have to decide who finished in what place due to point ties. As we broke into platinum, our semi final matchups were the Tour Excitement 91 and 92 matching up while the Tour Bordercats met the Dusty Danglers. The Danglers would upset the Bordercats as we had some excitement with Garrett Ross scoring the game winner in overtime. The Excitement easily eliminated the 91s, to advance to the final with the Danglers. As had been the situation earlier, both teams would battle hard and fierce and could not decide a winner in regulation. Brennan Benson and Matt Berry would trade hat tricks to get their team at the end of regulation to a 5 5 tie.
However, Tyler Dietrick would score four minutes into over time to win the game for the Excitement. As our Gold division got underway with their semi finals, The Oakville Coyotes would eliminate the Quest Eagles 6 3, while the Detroit Mission Stars would knock off Advanced Care in a penalty marred game where the Stars would capitalize on the mand advantage 3 1.
Both teams would head to the championship as we had a Coyotes/Stars final. As the game began, the Coyotes would jump out to a 2 0 lead on goals by Matthew Prepaverssis and Curtis Gamble and they would never relinquish that lead as they battled to keep the Stars from scoring. As the final buzzer sounded, the Coyotes had won the game and shutout the Stars 2 0.
Finishing as high scorer was Ryan Kish and our top goalie was Mason Henige.
Junior
Eight seemed to be the lucky number in junior as well as the Dusty Danglers, Hyper Devils, Mission Rattlers, Revision Buffalo Wings, Six feet under, Tour Bordercats and the Tour Excitement Gold and Platinum all would roll onto the Dumars surface for their holiday weekend battle. Teams comprised of players who were doubling in other divisions, brought new meaning to the word fatigue. As we once again went to the NARCh tiebreakers, we saw the Buffalo Wings and Mission Rattlers meet in the semi final in which the Wings, made a meal of the Rattlers.
As the Bordercats met the Tour Excitement Platinum, the Bordercats would advance to the finals after taking down a tired and somewhat worn out Excitement. Fresh after their PRO division matchup between the Bordercats and the Wings, Buffalo looked for revenge after losing 7 6 in that final. Revenge they had as they took the Bordercats down. Vin Scarsella led the Buffalo charge with a hat trick as Weston Arch answered back with a pair for the Bordercats.
As our gold seeds met, Six Feet under put the Hyper Devils to sleep early in a 6 2 win. Following that the Dusty Danglers proved that just because your dusty, doesnt mean you cant take it to your opponent in a 6 4 win over the Tour Excitement Gold. As both teams met in the championship, Six Feet and the Danglers met and it was all Six feet as they dug the grave of the Danglers in a lopsided win 11 3. Our high scorer was Ryan Lemke and our top goalie was Curren McNamara.
Bronze/Silver -
Any team with the name Six feet under, you have to love
in our adult division we had the Eden Hall Warriors, Revision Buffalo Wings Black and Green, Tour Detroit Revolution and the Tour Bordercats. As we were working on qualifying the teams to divide into Silver and Bronze, we saw the Tour Detroit Revolution finish as our second seed to face the Revision Buffalo Wings Black. In a game which again brought us to another overtime today, the Wings needed only :48 seconds to be declared the winner as Ryan Vertino roofed the puck, literally for the win and the advance to the finals with the Tour Bordercats.
As we also had the semi final matchup in the Bronze, the Eden Hal Warriors met the Buffalo Wings Green in that game. Mike Davis scored the game winner for the Warriors to advance them to the Bronze final with Six Feet under. That game would see the Warriors jump out to a 4 - 1 lead only to have Six Feet Under tie it up with four minutes to play. As we went to overtime, it took Rob Archer three minutes to score the game winner and the championship belonged to Six Feet.
In our Silver championship, the Bordercats would once again show the winning form they have all day as they downed the Wings, 5 2. Dave Yontz and Paul DeGrande would score two goals apiece in the championship effort. Our Top scorer was Mike Debrander and our top goaltender was Eric Werner
Womens
The ladies took to the floor to play four roundrobin games and two teams showed their dominance, while the girls Bordercats proved that although they may not be ready to compete at this level, they definitely have what it takes to be a very good team in the NARCh girls division. The lady Stars and Bordercats women, tied a game 2 2, then the Stars shut out the Bordercats twice in 3 0 and 2 0 victories. As the stage was set for the championships, Saturday evening, we prepared for the game and it was no disappointment.
Detroit jumped out to a 3 1 lead, on goals by Brianna Peterson, Baley Lane and Michelle Saunders only to have the Bordercats charge back led by dependable number four, Juli Bradford who tied the score with less than a minute to play. As we went to overtime, deadlocked at four apiece, we couldnt decide the game, so we had to go to a shootout which was a battle of nerves and goaltending as Rachel Roach was perfect stopping all over Detroit Mission Stars shooters for the win and overtime victory and championship. Congratulations to both teams for an excellent and entertaining game.
Baley Lane, Brook Ludolph and Michelle Saunders all tied for the scoring championship and to my knowledge the first time weve ever had a three way tie for high scorer. Nicolette Franck was our top goalie.
Thank you to everyone who participated here at Dumars. We wish you all a safe and Happy Memorial day Monday with your families and look forward to seeing all of you at the 2010 NARCh finals in San Jose!
NARCh Notes************************
We again, wish Matt Koleski well wishes and thoughts for recovery
Derek Ciminelli of Six Feet Under was assessed a minor for a delay of game in the championship in bronze for "toe dragging" the puck and sliding it between his legs, to the applause of the crowd in the stands. Ciminelli forgot to release the puck and used the tip of his blade to hold the puck while sliding it through his legs.
The Pro final between the Revision Buffalo Wings and the Tour Bordercats had over 400 people in attendance for a Sunday afternoon. Crowd favorite Chad Spezia scored both the game tying goal (6) and the game winning goal (7). Spezia, has also issued a challenge to Daryn Goodwin for a game of crossbar at the NARCh finals...
