There’s no Sun in Sunday so far.
More from the Joe.

There’s no Sun in Sunday so far.

Yesterday was an absolutely beautiful day, but today started off with drizzle. On my way to get my Starbucks I was slightly annoyed by the no left turn thing that goes on here in Michigan. Don’t quite understand that one, every steering wheel I’ve ever used turns equally both ways.

On my way to the rink I was thinking about one of the most frustrating parts of my job and something I will probably be dealing with today at the rink. Some coaches and parents are very persistent on pleading their case that they belong in a particular division, for argument sake let’s say it’s silver. Usually the facts are: 1) They’ve never been to the NARCh Finals, 2) They’ve only played teams from their region. Based on this, what makes them an expert to make the decision of what division they belong in over the people that 1) Have seeded teams every year for many years for the FINALS 2) See teams from all over the country and know the talent level each year 3) Don’t have any vested interested on how teams finish 4) Have the sole purpose of creating the most competitive divisions possible. Some teams truly just want to be competitive and have never been to the FINALS so they haven’t truly bought into the concept yet. I get that and understand it. However, some are more worried about winning than anything. Thank goodness that these teams are few and far between and the masses want to win of course, but the experience of competition is the most important thing at the end of the day. If we believe a team belongs in particular division and the team comes up with the threat that they’re not coming unless they’re seeded in the division that THEY think they belong, well that’s an easy one. I wouldn’t be much of a business man if I was so short sighted that I put the importance of an entry fee or two above the integrity of a whole division. You can never make everyone happy and I learned that a long time ago. I guess the point of my whole rant is that if you’ve never been to NARCh you need to trust the process. There’s a reason we have 400 teams and our customers come back every year. We’re not perfect, but we try to be.

Ok, off the soapbox now. The Texas Terror drove 19 hours to play in this tournament, now that’s commitment to the sport! They’re also coming to Toronto. It’s nice to have some TX presence.

The Cub Division exhibition yesterday was awesome. If you’ve followed the blogs and tourneys this year you know that we’ve put a lot of warranted energy into the 6’s again. It looks like 2 teams from Detroit will make it up to compete in that division.

The new patio here really makes hanging out at the rink great. Fireplace at night, sand volleyball courts, and great bar, paintings on the walls of a beach setting, it really is relaxing out there. I hung out with the rink owners in this market and shared a few adult beverages and chatted about the sport. It was a great time. I was waiting for Zarem to try to jump off the pier mural into the ocean of concrete, but it never happened. It definitely would have been the worst injury of the weekend if it did.

Playoffs are taking place now and running all day, so I guess I better get off this computer and watch some games. I’m taking off late tonight to get home tomorrow and shape up the San Diego Regional next weekend so Doug will be the official blogger for the recaps from Detroit. We appreciate everyone playing in this great event and we’ll see you in Toronto, if not sooner. Oh, one last thing, don’t forget we have two more regionals in this market, Buffalo in two weeks and Mississauga in three.

Thanks again for playing NARCh, and reading these blogs.
