Rahway recap
|
The weekend is over and in a way it's a relief. We saw some great hockey and some fantastic games, but we also witnessed some sportsmanship that completely takes away from the development and growth of the sport.
I want to personally send well wishes and thoughts to Mark Hausman who was struck by a player during an altercation. There is NO room in this sport for that type of behavior/action.
Moving on, congrats to Black Ice in the squirt division and head coach Jason Muro. Great team, great efforts and some passing that had my jaw drop. Vio and the Roadrunner's all played their hearts out against them, but came up short.
In our peewee division, we saw the Mission Snipers win the gold division. In the platinum, we witnessed a great game between the New Jersey Assault and the Cougars that went to overtime with the Assault pulling it out with :27 seconds gone into the OT period.
In Bantam we saw the Gold division battle between the two Roadrunners teams. 3 - 2 was the final as both teams fought hard and valiant for the NARCh gold medal.Bantam Platinum we witnessed the Mission Snipers and Salty Dogs go head to head with a keep me glued to my seat game that didn't end until one goalie shut the other one down. Morgenstern of the Snipers and Wakefield of the Dogs should both take a bow for their performances.
Midget, saw the prank of the day pay off as Anthony Flynn got punked. The Growl beat the Roadrunners 90, 4 - 1, but a little "joke" had Anthony Flynn swearing revenge. After the game, A NJ police man approached Flynn about his boisterous coaching manner on the bench. The officer asked Flynn what his problem was as the referees had called 911. Flynn completely turned white and began defending himself with a helpless and hopeless look. When the words "gotcha" came out, Flynn turned red and vowed revenge.
In our men's division, Congrats to the Mission Snipers who scored with 2. 2 second left to win the gold on a Greg "little tomahawk" Thomspon shot shortside over the ISCA Grizzlies who had been up 2 - 0 at one point. (is my punctuation ok, Pete?)
Our high scorers and top goalies are as follows:

Top scorer, Josh Weger, Black Ice
Top goaltender, Mike Ioveno, Black Ice
Peewee

From Pat and I, thank you to the staff at Center Circle for their help and support and we'll see you all in Broomall!!!
Closing notes**********
Dennis Jelcic of the Grizzlies loves cheesepuffs. Next time you see him, buy him a bag of Cheeto's. Dennis also has one of the most dry sense of humor I have ever witnessed, which makes him even more funny.
Jason Muro was wearing his trademark NY Isles cap and playoff growth (5 o'clock shadow). The trademark playoff growth(beard) got heavier as his playoffs continued.
Nomination for prompt attention to detail goes to Vio of the Roadrunner's. After trying to bribe the tournament directors with Dunkin Donuts, in an attempt to squeak his paperwork in late, Vio then bough Pat a 2.1 liter of Mountain Dew which Pat demolished. Vio, had his hands full in Rahway with close to ten teams playing. Thank you to him for his support of NARCh and the other programs too...
Chris Gosha of the NJ Assault dropped a hint he would LOVE to have a NARCh qualifier next year at his facility. Since I know Daryn proofreads my columns, Daryn, Chris wants a 2009 bid for a NARCh tourney.
Mark Hausman was cut above his left eye after breaking up a fight between two players in the peewee gold championship game. As Hausman valiantly tried to break up the two combatants, one player hit him in the face and opened him up. Being the trooper Mark is, he continued to break up the altercation while bleeding heavily. Hausman did not think of his own safety until both players were seperated and control had been restored. What was even harder to watch was the player who struck Mark then went over to his bench and high fived several players and they were all laughing about the incident. Their coach, at the time did nothing to discourage the behavior or the team's reaction. It was then that the team was told in no uncertain terms to leave the rink and go to their locker room.
It truly saddens me to see grown adults taunt and mock players when they leave the floor. While a few bad apples don't spoil the barrel, I certainly can see how the addage, "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree can apply"... this great sport is what WE all make of it. Do what you can to enjoy and participate, because one day, the game will pass you and you'll have nothing left but memories...so cherish your children's playing time and have fun!
With that note, Pat and I are out and we will see you all in Broomall!!!
