Monday Championship Recaps
| Bits and Pieces from the last day's finals.
Men's Gold
2 men's teams came to the states from Montreal, Quebec. Both of them had a good showing, and one of them made it to the final. The Montreal Grats beat Prestige Worldwide in the semifinal to earn a medal for the weekend's work. Prestige unfortunately embarassed themselves with their actions after losing the game, and will hopefully show a little more respect for the sport the next time they play. The Grats and a few 6 year old kids heard most of the tirade. The Grats were ready to move on to the final. Their opponent was a veteran of NARCh sucess in Team Bergenfield, who beat ISCA in a great semifinal earlier in the day. The Grats ended up taking the gold medal, as they completely dominated the game against Bergenfield. The high scorer was Jesse Weinstein of the Grats, and the top goalie was his teammate, Nick Saltenelly.
Men's Silver
The Growl and the Montreal Ducks looked as if they would sail into the Silver final as the highest two seeds in the division. Hockeymutt.com had something to say about though, as they took it to the Ducks in the semifinal and made their medal appearance. The final was a good one, going to overtime. Hockeymutt was riding high, scoring with about 30 seconds left in the game to tie it up. Growl made it a quick extra frame, scoring 30 seconds in, and taking home the gold medal. The high scorer was the Montreal Ducks Alexandre Grenier and the top goalie was Adam Weeks of Growl.
Men's Platinum
Take a look at Daryn's blog to see how these teams got here, but once the game started, the Liberty and Nightmare had the rematch of their game earlier in the day that ended in a tie. Great defense and goaltending was the Nightmare's nightmare, as the Liberty ended up winning the whole thing, 2-0.
35 & Over
From the beginning, everything was pointing to a Rockets vs. Faction Sports/Rink Rat final, and sure enough, that is exactly what happened. The teams tied in the round robin, but the final was anything but a close game. Daryn scored 5 goals in the game, making sure he could beat out Michael Hunt for the high scorer award, and the Rockets mercied Faction 8-0. The top goalie was Mike Turcotte from the Rockets.
Midget Gold
The upset of the day happened not once, not twice, but three times... all by the same team. This morning, the #10 seeded Jr. 495ers took it to the Buffalo Wolfpack 5-0 to move on to the semifinals. They then handed the Gladiators a 5-1 loss, making it to the final. In the final, things were not so easy, as the Tour Roaddrunners 92 played a solid game and sent things to overtime. In the end, the 3rd upset was complete, as the Jr. 495ers snuck one past the Roadrunners' goalie, winning the gold medal in the process. The high scorer was Chris Suskevich of the Roadrunners 92 and the top goalie was Tommy Nickel of the 495ers.
Midget Platinum
Mission Black Ice was an impressive Midget team this weekend, winning all 3 of their preliminary round games, and earning the #1 seed. Tour Excitement Black was their opponent in the semifinal, after they defeated Team World of Warcraft 8-0 earlier in the morning. Excitement was on a roll from the morning game, as they took Black Ice by surprise, handing them a 5-1 loss. The other semifinal saw the Tour Roadrunners 91 facing the other Excitement team, the Green team. The all Excitement final was a possibility, should they be able to upset the Roadrunners... they did just that, winning 4-2. This left an interesting situation for Excitment coach George Brown, choosing which team to coach in the game. He chose none of the above, and had two assistant coaches take over, while he watched and enjoyed from outside the glass. While one team had to be a winner in the game, the entire group of kids showed how talented this Buffalo based organization really is. The high scorer was Ryan Perry of Excitement Black, and the top goalie was Kenny Arnold.
Junior Platinum
One of the best games of the entire weekend was the last one of the weekend. Product 99 faced the Mission Labeda Snipers in the Junior final, and these two incredibly talented teams made it as great as it could have been. The 99ers got on the board first, as Matt Grabert scored halfway into the period. The 99ers then took 2 penalties within 30 seconds of each other, putting them in a 4-2 deficit. Grabert saw this situation as an opportunity, beating all 4 opponents down the floor with the puck then beating the goalie, putting them up by 2. The Snipers scored late in the half, making it a one goal game again. Snipers coach Tim McManus must have had some great strategies for his team, because they came out flying in the second half, tying the score at 2. The 99ers proved to be too much for the Snipers in the end as they stuffed 2 more pucks past the goalie, taking home the last title of the event. The high scorer was Cody Baugh of Product 99, who beat out teammate Grabert by a point, and the top goalie was the Snipers’ Nick Gullo.
That’s a wrap on another great weekend. We hope to see you at regional event in 2010.
