FOR NARCH TV
Marina High
Here is info you requested on Marina. They are playing tonight in the arena.

Marina High School Vikings
Varsity
Huntington Beach, California

7:20pm game v. Hawaii
Tuesday

NARCh TV Info

Marina High Scholl sits less than a mile from the Coast to Coast Hockey Rink – the Home of the OC Blades. Although its roster is the youngest at NARCh, 70% comprised of Freshmen and Sophomores (with only one senior), Marina is undefeated in round robin play thus far at NARCh with 13 goals for and 3 goals against. Though young, they boast a roster that has all TPC and NARCh level players, with four NARCh All Stars. Though young, they are deep and considered the team to beat in the future, especially when next season they add the younger Gibo brother to play with his older brother, Jared.

Marina is generally considered the “second best” team in California, behind the very strong El Dorado Eagles from Yorba Linda.

Varsity Roster

Alphabetical Order:

ELLIS, Brad #4 (AKA: “Junior Irish”)

Brad is the only Freshman on the team, and is leading the team in goals. He also played on the Las Vegas Tour Rebels in Bantams and in Juniors for the A team. It was Brad that got the dramatic Overtime Goal at Tour Pacific Cup in the AAA Championship game that won the first AAA title for Las Vegas. He credits Nick Moran, Daryn Goodwin, Shayne Arsenualt and Larry Sanford for bringing his game to the level it is today (All are his former coaches). Brad won the fastest Skater title in St Paul for Pee Wee and this year for High School. He was a Pee Wee all star in St Paul, and a Bantam All Star – one of three first year Bantams to make the team – this year in Florida. Brad also wrestles folkstyle in High School where he went undefeated all year long and in the Statewide Frosh-Soph tournament. Brad was recruited for AAA Tier 1 ice hockey in Colorado. He will live half the year next season in Colorado playing for Brad Buetow’s Team Colorado Midget AAA Tier 1 Ice Hockey team (Buetow is the former Head Coach for the Minnesota Gophers and at Colorado College). He has assured his team he will return and re-enroll in Marina in Spring 2004 to qualify for NARCh next season. He was an All State selection for Roller Hockey as a Freshman.

His Nickname is “Junior Irish” or “The Wild Thing.”

Coach Ellis says: “He needs to clean his room when his mother asks him to do so.”

Brad would like to say “Hi.” To his younger Brother, Ethan, who is at home watching this game on NARCh TV.

GIBO, Jared #3

Jared is a Junior Assistant Captain of Marina and second in goal scoring. He has been a centerpiece of the OC Blades teams since they were started by his father almost 10 years ago. Jared, a forward, has been a NARCh Platinum Champion, five time NARCh All Star, and four time Tour Pacific Cup Champion. Jared is also the newly elected Student Body President for Marina High School, whose grades hover around the near four-point-oh level. His favorite food is Shabu Shabu. This is his third year on varisty.

Jared will assume the mantle of Captain for next year’s team.

Jared’s nickname is : “Geeb” or “The Geeb.”

Coach Ellis says: “This kid has more talent than most good 2-3 players I know. He is am impact player. Scoring or not, when he is on the rink, things are going our way. I think his plus minus is so high its somewhere past Saturn.”

GRANT, Chaz #20 (or 21)

Chaz is a Junior Defenseman. He is also a member of the OC Blades 87 team. Chaz has also played for the EPH Young Romeos. Chaz is an avid Hockey Card collector, along with his best friend on the team, Josh Laricchia.

Chaz doesn’t have a team nickname because the boys think that Chaz is a nickname already.

Coach Ellis says: “Chaz has played with Brad before, and is the classic stay at home defenseman with a rocket slap shot. We don’t use enforcers, but with Chaz’ size, he keeps a close eye on the younger players if any opposing player tries to take advantage.”

Chaz is a team Assistant Captain.

Chaz would like to “Give a shout out to Moms and Pops at home” and watching on NARCh TV.

KLEINHANS, Andrew #21
TEAM CAPTIAN

Senior Forward. Andrew, forward, is the only Senior on the team and brings to it stability and leadership on and off the rink. He is a three year member of the Varsity.

His nickname is “Cappy.”

He will start Concordia College in Irvine, California, in the Fall and will return to Marina Varsity as an Assistant Coach. Andrew the Senior and Brad the Freshman are line mates, and together have produced the most goals for Marina. Andrew will police the rink for the younger and smaller Marina players. Andrew has also played for the Mission Raiders.

Coach Ellis says: “Without Andrew the boys would not be successful. He brings leadership to the team and was picked because he was so well respected.”

Andrew says: “Hi Mom.” Watching on NARCh TV.

KLEINHANS, Matt #14

Matt is a Sophomore defenseman. He is the team Clown, and any time you can take that title away from Junior Irish (Brad Ellis), you are doing something right in the comedy department. Matt will give the team cheer, a Marina Tradition, where he starts screaming “Ready…” and while everyone skates away he finishes it alone. Mat is another near Straight A student. Normally paired with Jared Yonekura, he has also played on the NARCh Gold Medal Mission Raiders Pee Wee team and this year’s Gold Bantam Silver Medalists. He is a solid defensive player and one of our go to guys on the defensive end.

His nickname is “Matty” or “Matty boy.” Matt is Andrew’s younger brother.”

Coach Ellis says: “Matty has played with me on various teams over the years, and he is definitely a free spirit. On the rink, he is all business.”

Matty says: “Hi Mom … and Hi to all my many fans out there is TV Land. Marina kicks booty. Autographs will be five bucks after the game.”

LARICCHIA, Josh #37 (La-REEK-EEE-aH)

Josh is a Sophomore Forward, and leads the team in overall points, well over 80% of which are Assists. He returns for his second year in Varsity. During last year’s NARCh in St Paul, Josh lost his mother to Cancer. Jeri was a very well known and loved Team Mom to many of the kids that play roller hockey in Southern California. Josh stayed and took home a Bronze Medal. This year he was a member of the OC Blades 87 team. He was a NARCh All Star from St Paul. He is here playing for Marina High School, and won the High School Skills Top Sniper award. He played in Ice Hockey on the Junior Ice Dogs, California State Champions.

He has been tapped as an Assistant Captain for next year’s Marina Varsity team.

His nickname is “Reekie.”

Coach Ellis says: “Josh is so deceptive. He carries most of his weight form the hips down, and is like a little troll out there making the tall trees look stupid. He is tough, calm under pressure and has hands God would ask God for, if he wasn’t God…you get the idea.”

Josh says: “UH…OK, hi to my family watching.”

SAKAGOUCHI, Brian # (SOCK-a-GOOCHIE)

Sophomore Defenseman. Brian is one of our key defensemen. With both TPC and NARCh experience with the OC Blades, Brain plays twice his size. He is one of the smartest players on the rink, and also will play point from time to time on the power play. He is also one of the quietest kids on the team, and has been nicknamed : “Mute” or “Saka-smoochy.”

Coach Ellis says: “I can always rely on Smoochy. He is always steady, and a calming influence. When everyone is getting weird, Brain settles them down.”

URBANO, Mike (Er-Bah-no)

Sophomore Goalie. Mike Urbano is also the OC Blades 87 goalie, and a former NARCh All Star. He has won numerous top goalie awards and was selected to the All State team for Roller Hockey in California.

Mike simply anchors the Marina defense, that has given up only three goals in the tournament so far.

Coach Ellis says: “Mike has never lost a game for us this year. He has always played well. He is our key, and a key I am happy to rely on.”

Mike’s nickname is “Mikey.”

YONEKURA, Jared (YAWN-a-KURA)

Sophomore Defenseman. Jared is another Marina sophomore defenseman. Normally paired with Matt Klienhans, he has also played on the NARCh Gold Medal Mission Raiders Pee Wee team and this year’s Gold Bantam Silver Medalists. He is a solid defensive player and one of our go to guys on the defensive end, but he is also our utility player who can play forward, defense, on power play and penalty kill.

Coach Ellis says: “Jared is a well rounded player, who we can rely on to fill a role when we need him to do so. One of our unsung heroes of the team.”

Jared’s nickname is “killer.”

COACHES:

Head Coach: Mark Ellis. Varsity Head Coach.

Coach Ellis says: “This is a great group of kids and players, and coaches for that matter. We gave the team to the players, and told them to make most decisions. We have 4-point-oh students. We have the student body president for Marina, and they are all good friends. No predictions. We just hope to medal. We basically brought our Frosh-Soph team, with only one senior, which means we will be back and stronger the next three years. We will add up to three of the Dominant OC Blades 88 and 89s in the years to come. It really is an honor to have coached them this season and I look forward to next season as well.”

Assistant Coach: Steve Yonekura. Also assistant coach for the Mission Raiders, last year’s NARCh Gold Pee Wee Champs and this year’s NARCh Bantam runner’s up. Steve is also an active board member for High School level hockey in Southern California. He was also instrumental in getting
