Subject: Land Travel (WHTI)--Passport Requirements

Just wanted to give you a heads up if you haven't heard already, .... the requirements are changing as of June 1, 2009 as to land travel from US border into Canada. As of June 1, 2009 a drivers license and birth certificate will no longer be sufficient and you will need a passport or passport card.

On June 1, 2009, the U.S. government will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have a passport, passport card.
Passports are $100 for adults and $85 for children and are good for 10-years for land, sea and air travel.
Passport cards are $45 for adults and $35 for children ($20 if you already have a passport and want the card as well) and are also good for 10-years, BUT passport cards are only good for land and sea travel. NOT for air travel.
Enhanced Drivers License contain a citizenship identity chip and are good for land and sea travel only.

Note that this June 1 requirement change does not effect Children Under 16. For children Under 16:

* CHILDREN: U.S. citizen children under the age of 16 will be able to present the original or copy of their birth certificate, or other proof of U.S. citizenship such as a naturalization certificate or citizenship card.
*
* Groups of U.S. citizen children ages 16 through 18, when traveling with a school or religious group, social organization, or sports team, will be able to enter under adult supervision with originals or copies of their birth certificates or other proof of citizenship.
* See the Department of Homeland Security's GetYouHome.gov for more information on the changing travel requirements. You can also read this info at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html
It takes approx. 6 weeks to receive your passport or passport card. (http://www.travel.state.gov) phone: 877-487-2778)

You can apply at your Secretary of State office and can get your photo taken at many of these Secretary of State offices as well. Check the Secretary of State websites in your area. You can also get your passport photos taken at several CVS stores and Kinkos stores. Call and see if the one nearest you provides the passport photo service.
